How does A/C work?

Wondering how your car produces that refreshing cold air? While systems may vary slightly, they operate on the same basic principle: removing heat and humidity from the air inside your vehicle and leaving behind a cooler, more comfortable environment. Here are the key components involved:

  • Compressor: Heats and compresses refrigerant into a high-pressure gas.
  • Condenser: A radiator-like system that cools the refrigerant using outside air, turning it into a liquid.
  • Thermal Expansion Valve or Orifice Tube: Decompresses the refrigerant, causing it to become very cold.
  • Evaporator: Another radiator that works in reverse; the cold refrigerant cools the warm cabin air.
  • Accumulator or Receiver/Drier: Collects the refrigerant after it has cooled the air, removes any moisture, and sends it back to the compressor.

This system is a closed loop, continually pushing refrigerant through these components.

Step 1: The compressor heats and compresses the refrigerant into a highly pressurized gas.

Step 2: It’s then sent to the condenser, where it cools and condenses into a liquid.

Step 3: The thermal expansion valve or orifice tube depressurizes the refrigerant, making it extremely cold.

Step 4: The cold, low-pressure refrigerant travels to the evaporator, cooling the cabin air.

Step 5: After cooling the air, the refrigerant turns back into a gas, is collected by the accumulator or receiver/drier, and any moisture is removed before it returns to the compressor.

What’s the problem?

Understanding the basics of your A/C system can help you identify why it might not be working correctly. Typically, warm air from the A/C is caused by low refrigerant levels. Since it’s a closed system, this usually indicates a leak.

We’re here to help.

At Automotive Angels in Bath, Ontario, we begin with a thorough visual inspection and leak test to identify and seal any refrigerant leaks. If the problem goes beyond low refrigerant, our skilled technicians will run diagnostics and provide clear recommendations.
